Nate Parker Is Tired of Defending His Innocence for Rape Allegations: “I’m not going to apologize for that”

Director and star of The Birth of a Nation film, #NateParker, came under fire after rape allegations from his college days had resurfaced. The incident happened in 1999 and was, for whatever reason, brought back up just two months before the biggest moment of his career, putting said Carter in jeopardy. Ever since the case was made public, Parker has been under scrutiny for not “being sorry enough” for his presumed actions and for not appearing to have had enough empathy for the victim.

During his interview with Robin Roberts of Good Morning America this morning, Parker refused to continue to apologize for the rape case, because he was found to be innocent, therefore he has nothing to apologize for. “I was falsely accused. I was proven innocent. I’m not going to apologize for that,” he says. While he feels “terribly” about the situation, it is taking away from the movie that he has been working so hard on.

Parker goes on to ask whether or not Robin Roberts thinks that his film The Birth of a Nation is important to her considering she is a woman of color who may face injustice everyday. “I think the important thing, you know, is this isn’t about me,” Parker said. “The story of Nat Turner as an American, as American people, the story about a man who was erased from history, at some point. I think that’s where our focus should be.”
