Controversial South African athlete Caster Semenya has given her fans a
unique glimpse into her life outside sport with an intimate series of
images and videos as she plans a ‘white wedding’ with her partner.
South African Caster and Violet Raseboya, also an athlete who celebrated
their union with a traditional ceremony last year, will make their
marriage official over Christmas, a friend has revealed.
The nuptials will mark the end of an extraordinary year for the 800m
Olympic gold medallist whose victory in Rio was the most bitterly
contested event of the games.
The couple have been together for a decade and held a traditional
ceremony in rural Limpopo province, three hours north of Johannesburg,
last December following a 12-month engagement.
According to reports, the Olympian, who won silver at London 2012 paid £1,500 ‘lobola’ - or bride price - to her bride’s family.
Caster was at the centre of a controversy in the Rio 2016 Olympics after
other female competitors complained that her condition of having
naturally elevated levels of male testosterone meant she was much too
fast and strong to compete among regular females.
Caster's ‘intersex’ condition of hyperandrogenism gives her testosterone
levels that are three times those usually found in women and
approaching those of a man.
She was born with no womb or ovaries and instead, due to a chromosomal abnormality, internal testes.
