Republican-less California Senate race features two female candidates — one of which did the ‘dab’ on a debate stage

California’s “jungle primary,” where candidates face off in a primary regardless of their party affiliation, brought out some serious moves when two Democrats Kamala Harris, California’s attorney general and Loretta Sanchez, a congresswoman from the state’s 38th district met on stage.
The latter actually busted out the dab. Yes, the dab.In the latest Real Clear Politics polls, Harris holds about a 13-point edge over Sanchez but that was before the dance.

Despite the moves, things are looking kind of gloomy for Sanchez. Perhaps that’s why she felt she had to unveil something special in their debate Wednesday night. As CNN points out, when the debate moderator informed Sanchez that her time was up, she continued to speak for about 10 seconds and then wrapped up the thought with a quick “dab.”

Since its release, it’s quickly become synonymous with victory. So maybe Sanchez’s answer just “got her feelin’...Fab.”
In response, Harris looked somewhat bemused, saying, “So, there’s a clear difference between the candidates in this race.”
Her campaign criticized the pose. Her communication director Nathan Click tweeted that the dab was “as weak as the rest of her debate performance.”
Luis Vizcaino, who serves as Sanchez’s spokesman, confirmed that the motion was indeed an attempt at the dab. He tweeted, “And this is why Millennials support @Loretta2016 for Senate...”

While it’s the first time a candidate has done the arm-flailing move while discussing the issues, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton did try her hand at it back in January on “Ellen.”
It’s exceedingly more common in sports: reigning NFL MVP Cam Newton helped popularize it beginning last October; it’s also been brought out by Cincinatti Bengals running back Jeremy Hill.
Perhaps Donald Trump will give it a shot when he boasts about his knowledge of the tax code in the debate on Sunday night.
